San Antonio ISD Tests AI to Help Students Read Better. Did Coursemojo Work?

San Antonio ISD is bringing an AI-powered literacy platform called CourseMojo into its classrooms, part of a broader push by one of Texas’s largest urban school districts to use technology to address persistent reading and writing gaps among its students.

The move places SAISD inside a growing national experiment: can AI tools, deployed carefully alongside trained teachers, meaningfully improve outcomes for students who have historically been underserved by the education system? The early evidence from other districts suggests the answer might be yes, with conditions attached.

What is CourseMojo and How Does It Work in a Classroom?

CourseMojo is an AI-powered English language arts platform built to embed directly into the curriculum a school district is already using, rather than sitting alongside it as an extra tool teachers have to fit into their day.

CourseMojo offers AI supports for students and teachers aligned to top-rated ELA curricula. Most teachers do not want an extra program or product but rather tools designed to make their core instruction more effective, engaging, and easier.

In practice, that means when a teacher assigns a reading task or writing prompt from the district’s existing curriculum, CourseMojo turns that same content into an interactive experience. Students receive personalized real-time feedback on their responses. Teachers get a live dashboard showing which students are struggling, which answers show strong thinking worth discussing with the class, and how many times individual students attempted each question.

Teachers can view how many times each student attempted a question and see why partially correct answers were flagged. Teachers also take a look at answers the software highlights as particularly strong and worth sharing with the class.

The student experience is more conversational than a traditional worksheet. One 6th-grader in Allentown, where CourseMojo is already running, called it “basically a teacher online.” Reviews from students are mixed, some report real improvement in their writing, others find the feedback occasionally vague. That tension is typical of first-year technology rollouts in schools.

Why is San Antonio ISD Bringing in an AI Literacy Tool?

San Antonio ISD Chief Information Technology Officer Eva Mendoza has been direct about the stakes: “AI is no longer just an IT concern. It is a cultural shift that requires a collaborative strategy across all areas of the district.”

SAISD serves a largely low-income student population in one of Texas’s most economically stratified cities. Reading performance has been a persistent challenge. District leaders have described AI tools as potentially leveling the playing field, giving students access to the kind of real-time academic support that students from wealthier households often get from tutors or parents at home.

The bet SAISD is making is that a well-implemented AI tool can partially substitute for the academic scaffolding that many of its students simply do not have access to outside school hours.

CourseMojo’s alignment with Texas curriculum standards gives it a practical advantage in that argument. More than 400 Texas school districts have adopted Bluebonnet RLA curriculum for the 2026-27 school year, and CourseMojo has aligned its platform directly to that curriculum, with content available this summer. SAISD does not have to ask teachers to learn a new curriculum and a new tool simultaneously. The tool wraps around what they are already teaching.

What Do the Results Look Like in Other Districts?

Aldine ISD classrooms that implemented CourseMojo in 2024-25 saw a 10% point year-over-year gain on the STAAR assessment compared to classrooms that did not implement the platform. STAAR is Texas’s statewide standardized reading and writing assessment, and a 10-point differential between CourseMojo classrooms and non-CourseMojo classrooms in the same district is a significant gap.

In Tennessee, the results from Sumner County Schools point in the same direction. School-grade groups averaging 25 or more CourseMojo activities per student improved ELA proficiency by an average of 3.7% points, compared with flat or negative growth district-wide for the same grade level. The key phrase there is “25 or more activities per student.” Usage intensity mattered. Districts that used the platform consistently saw results. Those with inconsistent adoption did not.

CourseMojo supports more than 75 districts and charter management organizations nationwide and has earned ESSA Tier 2 evidence recognition for demonstrated impact on student literacy outcomes. ESSA Tier 2 is a federally recognized-evidence standard, not the highest bar, but a meaningful one that requires demonstrated statistical significance.

What are the Risks San Antonio ISD is Managing?

Texas has been notably slow on AI policy for schools. The Texas Education Agency has issued no statewide guidance on AI use in K-12 classrooms, and most San Antonio school districts had not adopted formal AI policies as of late 2024. The policy vacuum has left individual districts to navigate the risks themselves, which creates inconsistency and puts significant responsibility on local administrators.

The CourseMojo rollout is not without its critics among students. Feedback that feels generic or fails to explain why an answer is only partially correct frustrates students who are trying to learn from their mistakes rather than just complete a task. One teacher implementing CourseMojo in Allentown noted: “I am constantly reminding myself this is year one with this.” That kind of calibrated expectation is healthy, but it requires district leadership to hold that line when parents or board members want faster results.

There is also the broader question of what happens when the tool leaves the classroom. AI literacy platforms can provide real-time support during a lesson. They cannot follow a student home. For SAISD’s student population, where the homework environment is often constrained, a tool that only works during school hours has natural limits on how much it can close the gap.

What This Signals for Texas Education Technology

SAISD’s adoption of CourseMojo is not happening in isolation. It is part of a measurable acceleration in AI adoption across Texas school districts as the 2026-27 school year begins.

At least 8 Texas districts have confirmed CourseMojo use for the coming school year, with more expected as Bluebonnet RLA adoption expands and districts look for tools that work within their existing curriculum rather than beside it.

The districts moving fastest on AI in education share a common characteristic: they have framed the question not as “should we use AI” but as “how do we use AI responsibly to serve students who need the most support.” SAISD’s leadership has been consistent on that framing.

Whether CourseMojo delivers at scale what it has shown in controlled pilots will depend on teacher training, implementation quality, and whether the district treats the data the platform generates as a tool for instruction rather than a performance metric for teachers. Those are organizational questions as much as technological ones, and they are the ones that tend to determine whether edtech investments produce lasting results or collect dust after the pilot year ends.
